VERT - The Flight Simulator for radiation therapy

In 2014, Access to Care (A2C) Cape Town radiotherapy training programme was launched with the specific aims of supplementing practical radiotherapy training across low to middle income countries and increasing the skills of radiotherapy professionals. The project was part of a collaboration between the University of Cape Town (UCT), Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) and Varian Medical Systems (VMS). One goal was to assist multidisciplinary teams with a move towards changing radiotherapy techniques within their departments from 2D to 3D conformal radiotherapy. Since then, a course focused on more advanced techniques was also developed. The programme involved a mixture of e-learning and classroom-based learning, including the use of VERT alongside radiotherapy planning software and clinical demonstrations. A paper was published by the UCT Radiotherapy teaching during COVID-19: An emergency teaching response’, which highlights the use of VERT during the pandemic.
