VERT - The Flight Simulator for radiation therapy

The QUT Bachelor of Radiation Therapy Programs are designed to provide a stimulating and engaging learning experience for the students and this is possible through the use of the VERT simulation suite, with functionality reflecting current trends and practices in the radiation therapy setting.

The teaching and learning approaches utilised in the VERT simulation suite represent approximately 50% of the practical classes that QUT students undertake on campus. These activities incorporate photons, electrons, protons and image matching exercises using CBCT/kV. VERT has also been a valuable learning tool in teaching QA concepts to students; the ability to export QA verification plans  for IMRT, VMAT, and DCAT plans and demonstrating the delivery on VERT enhances the teaching of patient-specific QA concepts in radiation therapy at an undergraduate level.

All of these VERT activities reinforce elements that make learning more realistic including communication skills, work efficiency, accuracy, plan evaluation, decision making and the opportunity to receive timely feedback in a collaborative supportive environment.

The QUT Bachelor of Radiation Therapy whole of course design is scaffolded to support student learning experiences from foundation skills to capable practitioner. From the novice undertaking non-complex tasks to the graduate demonstrating skills in a range of settings, applying reasoning and critical evaluation skills to determine appropriate clinical decision making.

The incorporation of VERT as a teaching tool is invaluable, as it provides an opportunity for QUT students to undertake practical classes to consolidate academic knowledge and provides practical application of theory. This is able to be achieved in a safe learning environment without clinical pressures, enabling students to build skills in preparation for clinical placement and meet the standards for professional registration upon graduating from the University.
